Counselling and Guidance

Counselling & Guidance is a part and parcel of the Society. Helen’s Society addresses the needs of problem-solving potential among children, youth, women and aged persons.

Our present society is overwhelmed with complex life style which leaves many into stress, depression and psychological disorders.

Helen’s Educational Society addresses such needs through our trained counselors and provides an apt guidance to them in their distress. The Society has touched the lives of many in their problems like failed relationship in married life, poor performance in education, lack of socialization and other psychological inhibitions.

Health Awareness Camps

Health for all is a fundamental need of any society. Slum communities rarely access the health care services available in the Government: this happens because of various reasons like lack of awareness and motivation to be healthy, prejudices about illness and disease patterns.

Helen’s Educational Society organizes one-day Eye Check-up, Dental Check-up, Typhoid and Jaundice   vaccination camps for the general public periodically. These programmes are organized in co-ordination with Voluntary Organizations with due recognition to create health awareness especially among the socially backward residents in and around Ekkattuthangal.

Evening Free Tuition Centre for Poor Boys and Girls

Children of first generation learners and disadvantaged sections lag behind in education. Helen’s Educational Society provides free tuition for such children in the age group of 5 years to 18 years.

These children are given supplementary care in education to exhibit their inherent talents and abilities, and to develop greater interest in education. For deprived children, education is a tool for empowerment.

In the evening tuition centers, they are also given inputs for the overall development of physical, socio-emotional, intellectual and morale areas of their lives.

Poor Students Educational Aid

Helen’s Educational Society arranges for educational aid to poor students who are studying in schools and colleges. Education brings enlightenment and self-reliance. Many students discontinue their education because of poverty, social background and lack of financial support and motivation.

Every year about 50 students are supported to continue their education. Educational Aid helps these   students to meet their educational fee, school uniforms, textbooks and notebooks expenses.

General Child Development Scheme

Children are the heritage to the family and society. They follow our footprints and form the future community. They should be given good socio-economic, cognitive and spiritual care to become a holistic member of our community.

Under Child Care Programme, children are screened for basic health problems and treated. In vulnerable cases, they are referred to appropriate Hospital Care Treatment. Children in the age group of 3 to 5 years are given early intervention to become a holistic individual. Polio drops camps are organized periodically in the Society’s campus in accordance with the Government Scheme. The public are kept informed of its importance and administration schedule through hand bills and door- to door campaign.

Teen and Youth Camps

The Society organizes youth camps for the age group of 12 years to 21 years. The main purpose of the camp is to motivate the youth in productive, creative and future oriented thoughts, deeds and activities. Youth in the slums lack basic understanding of life and their future perspectives. They are born and brought up in the same locality without even attempting to realize their potential.

Keeping these needs in mind, the Society organizes camps and retreats to identify the potential youth and motivate them to be at their best as well as to be a role model for the others in their neighborhood.

Retreat for Parents

Helen’s Educational Society organizes retreat for the parents on General Health Awareness Programmes, Child Care and Nurturing. Adolescent parents are emphasized on the Caring and Guiding principles of their wards.

Poor Feeding and Clothing

Poor and aged are covered under the Poor Feeding and Clothing Programme.

Old age is the second childhood in which they need to be cared for. Due to urban impacts, aged parents in the villages lack care from children and family members.

Helen’s Educational Society makes periodical visits to old age homes and provides means to support their food, health care, clothing and counselling  needs.  Annually, Christmas gifts are provided for about 50 lepers at the Leper Centre in Chengalpattu.

Christian Matriculation Higher Secondary School

Helen’s Educational Society runs a formal school at Ekkattuthangal, Chennai district, to address the Educational and Competitive needs of boys and girls who come from socially backward sector and helps them to evolve as potential citizens. This school was started to emphasize life skills and helps to imbibe values and principles within the child that would facilitate them to grow into effective and loving human beings.
